To Inspire and Empower You to Grow Your Own Food

Backyard Garden

Before the first backyard garden, there was a container garden on a tiny patio in Southern California. Then here, a small backyard in the inner city of Minneapolis. Lots of firsts in this space, which felt like a huge garden the first couple of years! It was my first experience growing in the soil.

Up North

Then the journey pointed farther north and a bigger backyard garden in the city for a growing family. Along with learning how to grow more food and different varieties, we added a few fruit trees and berry bushes around the house.

The Farm

And finally, to the small, diversified family farm where growing USDA Certified Organic CSA, berry, flower and orchard is a lifelong passion. We apply polyculture farming practices, which has deep roots in indigenous communities and ancient civilizations. The learning curve has been steep, lessons hard earned, and love of growing deepened. The journey continues to unfold as we Cultivate the North together.

It is difficult to find applicable information in growing food in Zones 3 and 4 where frost dates are not consistent and summers are short. We want to remove the barriers to simple growing in The North.

Seed packets are written for warmers zones and often lacking detailed information about the plant specifics, how to start seeds, when to fertilize and to harvest. We want to put all that information at your fingertips.

Our modern food system is complex to decode, easily disrupted and fraught with ambiguity. Our vision is the Modern Victory Garden, taking inspiration from past heroic beginner gardeners and being empowered today to take steps to champion local foods, become more sustainable and be knowledgable and active in our food system.

As a gardener, the Modern Victory Garden is notably reflected in pride in having a vegetable or herb garden, learning skills of self-sufficiency, providing dinner from your garden, deeper connections with family and neighbors, and improving your health with your own highly nutritious foods.
